Congratulations on the purchase of your new purebred Bichon Frise puppy!  He (she) will provide you with great companionship for years to
come.  With a little patience you will have your new friend house-trained in no time.  I prefer the crate method, but that is your choice.  Your
puppy has been cut down to 2 feedings a day the last week he stays at my home.  That way it makes it easier for you to set up your own
feeding schedule.  I prefer to feed the young pups at least 3-4 times a day.

We feed our puppies Life's Abundance dog food. It is a human grade dog food with lots of veggies and vitamins. It does cost more. You never
know what kind of so called ingredients are in the grocery store brands. Also, you will notice you dog will have firmer stools (easier to clean
up).  This also means they are utilizing their food instead of pooping it all out. There is a sample bag in your “puppy kit”

Also it is a good idea to have plenty of rawhide chew toys.  I prefer the un-basted white ones because they don’t stain my carpets or the dog’s
face. Please purchase the ones made in the USA and not a foreign country. They often use chemicals to dry and preserve the bones which
can cause harm or death to your puppy!  Small dogs are prone to early tooth loss and I highly advise a diet of hard dog food (KIBBLE).
Please use supervision with anything your puppy may put into his mouth.

I do my own grooming and it is a good idea to get your puppy used to a little handling before you send him off to the groomer.  The three
essentials are a good slicker brush, a wire comb, and a pin brush.   If you brush your dog at least 1 time a week your groomer will LOVE to
see you coming, believe me!!!

***Also Bichons are prone to have allergies to flea bites, so the first thing you will want to do is get a puppy on some kind of flea program.  I
use FLEA FREE (and it’s good for them). I take ¼ cup of Flea Free and mix it up with water in a gallon jug and put it in the refrigerator. Let me
know if you are interested in this and I will send you a link to the website.   This is a totally holistic flea control program.  Your vet may also
suggest another brand like Frontline, Advantage, or Sentienel, etc.  Do you realize these products can eventually lead to health problems with
your precious pets?  Do you know the fleas that bother
your poor dog, actually come from a cat?

Your puppy has had its first shot.(shots)  I used Vanguard Plus 5 puppy shot.  DA2P+CPV—first shot 8 weeks, second shot @ 12 weeks.
Your puppy has also been dewormed with Drontal Plus.  We do not believe you should over vaccinate your puppy. Please consult with your
vet on this.
Do not vaccinate your Bichon puppy for Lepto

***I sell all my Bichon Frise  puppies with a health guarantee.  You have 72 hours from the above date to have your puppy examined by a
licensed veterinarian.  If there are any health problems, bring the pup back and your purchase price will be fully refunded.  After that time, up
to 1 year, if some thing happens to the pup you may return the pup for another of equal value. Shipping is to be paid both ways from the
buyer if returning a puppy.
Negligence is Not included.   Illness must be documented by a licensed vet.  (Genetic health problems only, under bite, overbite, umbilical
hernias, dew claws, etc.  are not included)

I do not sell puppies for breeding, but you may do so at YOUR OWN RISK.  My puppies are sold as “pet companions ONLY” (unless you are
purchasing a Bichon Frise puppy with full AKC registration.) Your puppy should be spayed or neutered as soon as possible. We do not
guarantee any puppy that may not come out of the anesthetic for any surgery.  Any animal or human does take a risk by being under
anesthesia and things do happen.

If at sometime you find that you cannot take care of your Bichon Frise, please call and I will make arrangements to find a new home.  Don’t
forget, you can never give your puppy too much attention or love, just be patient and in a few weeks your household will be back to “normal”.
If you decide to crate train try not to give in to the pups whining the first few days as they have all been in the crate, if only for a short time.  I
know it’s really easy to put them in bed with you, believe me, and let them
whine.  You will thank yourself later.  Enjoy your new best friend.

Any Questions call me at 815-745-2400 (I will try to help).  I have been doing this for a while now, or you may e-mail me at

CRATE SIZE----IF YOU PLAN ON CRATE TRAINING, PLEASE DO NOT GO OUT AND BUY YOUR PUPPY A HUGE CAGE
WHICH HE CAN RUN AND PLAY IN. THAT IS TOTALLY DEFEATING THE PURPOSE OF THE CRATE METHOD!!!
DIMENSIONS SHOULD BE ABOUT
19 ½ X 12 ½ X 10” HIGH.  IF YOU GO MUCH BIGGER YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME AND THE PUPS. After the pup is
trained, you may get as big of a crate as you like.
If we are shipping your Bichon Frise puppy the correct size crate will be used.

About Vaccines and Bichons
Anne Jones RN, BSNE

It has been the custom for many years to administer vaccines annually to all breeds of dogs.  There has also been an increase in
all breeds of autoimmune diseases, including in Bichons.  Many breeders have long suspected a connection and research
veterinarians have agreed.  Therefore there have been a number of well-documented research studies in the last 5 years as to
whether annual administration of preventive vaccines is warranted.

Research has indicated that yearly vaccines are not necessary to insure immunity and that some vaccines have little effect on
prevention of certain diseases.  Recommendations have been issued suggesting that only core vaccines be given to all dogs,
those being distemper, parvo, adenovirus and rabies.  Other vaccines should be administered only on a need basis, if at all.
Furthermore, these vaccines should only be given every 3 years or the dogs should have blood titers run to determine if the
vaccine is needed at all.  More about titers later.  The Bichon Frise Club of America also recommends that any combination
shots be separated entirely from the injection of rabies vaccines by a minimum of one month.

It seems necessary to us, the parent club responsible for overseeing the health and welfare of Bichons, to strongly urge all
Bichon owners to be an advocate for their dogs.  While many veterinarians are heeding the recommendations, far too many
continue to vaccinate all dogs annually, regardless of health of the animal or advisories against this practice.  Therefore the
owner must take responsibility to question the habitual action, asking instead for a blood titer.

Blood titers are long established as a means of determining the level of a given substance in the blood, in this case antibodies
present in the blood to protect the animal against disease.  While a blood titer is more expensive than vaccine, it is far less
expensive in the long run than treating a potentially fatal blood disorder or other serious disease.  Now there are machines
available to veterinary clinics that will enable some to do these tests in house rather than to send them out to laboratories to be
run.  The test done in the veterinarian’s own clinic should reduce costs considerably.  But we should never consider cost of
testing to be more important than protecting the health of the animal.

Rabies may be the most stressful vaccine of them all.  However because of the increase of rabies in wild animal populations,
these vaccines remain essential to protecting the dog from fatal illness.  Some states require yearly vaccination by law, while
others require the immunization be given every 3 years.  While we feel strongly that the 3 year vaccine does prove effective for
Bichons, which are a house breed and not a yard breed, we cannot recommend that you break the law.  It is extremely important
to the health of your Bichon that this vaccine, whether the one year or the three year, be given a minimum of one month before or
after the combination shot.  Better yet, separate them by several months to allow the immune system to recover between
injections.

We, the BFCA Health Committee, urge you to discuss vaccines with your veterinarian so that between you, you can do what is
best for your dog.  We are basing our recommendation on reliable research as well as our own data collected on thousands of
Bichons.  Too many of them are dying too young from disease that might have been prevented had the immune system been
stronger.

To sum up, these are our recommendations:

1.

Combo vaccination will include Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), Canine Adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), and Canine Parvovirus
type-2 (CPV-2), all modified live viruses (MLV) and no corona or leptospirosis. (Please note that Corona and Adenovirus type 1
(CAV-1) are not considered necessary vaccines and that leptospirosis is needed only in locations where it is a risk and does
have the possibility of serious adverse reactions.)
2.

Combo vaccination will be given at the age of 8, 12, and 16 weeks, one year later (about 18 months of age), and every 3 years
only if titers indicate low immunity.
3.

Rabies vaccination at the age of 5-6 months, one year later and then every 3 years.
4.

Any other vaccinations should only be considered when absolutely necessary due to circumstances in the area the dog
resides.

Please feel free to print out this article for your veterinarian to read and as a start to a discussion with him or her.  Your
veterinarian will understand that you and the parent club choose to act as advocates for your dog and have his (her) best
interests at heart.  Our statement is based on valid research and the data that we have collected on the health of Bichons
nationwide and around the world.

In addition, because they also can be a factor in autoimmune disease, we strongly suggest that you discuss with your
veterinarian the use of preventive drops and medications for fleas, ticks and other pests.  You can find more information about
preventives and their effects in the article, THE WISE USE OF PREVENTIVE MEDICATIONS.  We suggest that you read the
article carefully so as to better understand the dangers involved in their use.
